Down Syndrome

What IS a typically average normal child anyway?

Normal, Typical, Average... all words that describe children without anything medically wrong with them.

It must be harder than parenting a normal child...
When a typical child develops they do it this way...
It takes them a bit longer than the average child doesn't it...

The problem is, I actually don't know a single child that has NEVER had anything wrong with them or done everything on time and therefore come under umbrella of the above words, from allergies to minor ailments to glue ear to mild learning difficulties and geniuses. There is always something that a parent can say 'oooh when blah had that at blah age' taking them out of your average child range and into the non typical bracket. So what is a 'Typically Average Normal child' then?

The truth is they don't exist. Different is normal, unpredictable is typical and average is an idea that is measured on the above, making it unlikely to be true as there is no true meaning to any of it and so makes no sense what so ever and means it actually does not exist itself....

I mean come on, Rocky is supposed to be a typically average normal kid and he's had all sorts of issues that are rarer than cake left at the end of a WI meeting and quirks which make his personality described as 'challenging'. Nothing is normal about that kid.

So next time someone mentions to you about typical children or measures your child against an average child, feel free to mention that being average doesn't exist and that typically normal is a myth and so your child is no different after all.
