Being something you're not is part and parcel of being a blogger, vlogger or social media influencer now it seems. I am not overly criticising, I am guilty of this too every now and then, but recently I have found that many fellow bloggers are going down a very disturbing spiral of creating content out of fabricated photos and stories just for hits; and it is driving me mad.
We live in a social media styled world in which people with perfectly white houses and made up faces dictate what we see as 'normal'. However I know for a fact that most of these perfect houses and faces are just a very well staged act. A single wall of perfection amongst a house of complete chaos. A single day of perfectly done filming face, amongst the regular none make up school run version. We as 'real life social media influencers' are a complete con.
It doesn't just stop there though. We are suddenly in a whirlpool of completely fabricated lives and exaggerated versions of happenings, in which we used to only find in tabloid newspapers and Eastenders. You genuinely cannot believe ANYTHING you read any more, whether it is a well loved blog, social media influencer or newspaper. We have suddenly become just a part of the conspiracy theory of what actually is 'normal', as none of these people actually know what is true any more, so how are we supposed to?
Blogs were supposed to be the real life version of journalism. The real opinions of real people. The escapism and the quick 'me too' smile that everyone needs to have pop up on their timeline every now and then. But suddenly you can't trust anyone! People who are living in a fantasy world are winning awards over people with genuinely well written, funny and informative pieces. It's like The Sun winning an award for best written balanced political journalism. It's jaw dropping as to what people will do for a bit of attention now and I am through with it.
There are, however, a hidden but decent percentage of real life 'this is me' bloggers left and I pray that they don't fall into the mass production of perfect settings and styled or dramatic lives that others have, as we need them! We need them to keep the real in 'real life'. We need them to make us feel better about our lives. We need them to remind us that the mess in front of us is the real 'normal'. We need them to balance out the crap that appears on our screens.
Each to their own though. This fake perfection and over dramatised Blah, is obviously very popular amongst many and will carry on for as long as it stays the fashion.
Real life though, that will stay around forever. Stay true to yourself. Stop pretending. Stop creating content which is untrue. Exaggerate or lie once and all your posts become questionable!
